This is one of of the first songs Ray recorded and still one of my favorites. I found a punk rock version he recorded with the Cowboy Twinkies that I will eventually put up here... | ||
| 1974 | Portales-"Punk/Speed Metal" version | Ray Wylie Hubbard |
So the band "The Cowboy Twinkies" had been in the studio (Pecan Street in Austin) since about 9:00am recording their record. B.W. Stevenson had stopped by earlier to make a guest appearance on the record and Michael Murphy (this was before he got his middle name) was going to stop by after his show that night and sing on Portales. Well it was about 1:00am and they were waiting for Murphy but had been playing all day and were fried...so they needed to do something to entertain themselves and clear their mind until Murphy showed up. So they broke into this version of Portales...Ray and the bass player were laying on the floor on thier backs playing guitar and Buffalo was standing on a chair and they were having a good ole' time and Murphy came in, took one look heard the song and according to the engineer ran out the door and left town. He thought they were recording some punk record and that was version they wanted him to sing on! Of course the reputation the Twinkies had back then wouldn't have made that possibility too far fetched. What they lacked in talent they made up for in attitude.

| 1974 | Freeway Church of Christ | Ray Wylie Hubbard and Bob Livingston | This is about that Church on the West side of I-35 between Austin & Dallas in Waco. I guess after you make that run a thousand times and see the same buildings you write songs about them. | |
